Description:George Burrell Ramsay a Scotsman arrived in Birmingham around 1871. While out walking he saw an Aston Villa F.C. practise match in the spring of 1876. Burrell asked for a game and dazzled the other players with his dribbling skills and ball control. He was invited to join the team, was elected captain, and soon became a favourite with the club's growing band of supporters.
He led them to their first trophy win, the Birmingham Senior Cup in 1880, and saw the club win six FA and six League championships as Secretary between 1884 and 1926. Ramsay died in October 1935 after 59 years at the club.
His gravestone states he was a founder of the club, which he wasn't, but he was probably their first star player. Ramsay lived at 15 Hampton Road in Birchfield.
His inscription reads:
"Cherished memories of George Burrell Ramsay (Aston Villa FC founder), who fell asleep October 7th 1935 in his 81st year. Never a wasted minute. Also of Eric Thomas Warwick, son of the above, who died January 3rd 1901 aged 4 months. Also of Elizabeth Rebecca, beloved sister of the above George Burrell,entered into rest March 14th 1934 aged 68 years.
