Date:1986

Description:"Born 1958 in Black River, Jamaica. Zephaniah came to England at the age of two and lived in the Lozells district of Birmingham. In the early part of his career, he performed politically motivated 'dub poetry' in community centres, churches and school halls in Birmingham and throughout Britain. In 1979 he moved to London, and became involved in a workers co-operative which led to the publication of a small booklet of poetry. Always outspoken on 'black issues', his performances made a strong impression with the media. Zephaniah's first book 'Talking Turkey's' was published in 1994, since then he has performed worldwide on TV, Radio and in concert. Throughout the years he has supported numerous charities, and has made a great contribution to a government task force dealing with creativity within the National Curriculum." Pogus Caesar, Februrary 2003
