Description:Sketch of Hamstead Colliery, Hamstead, taken from the Birmingham Daily Mail, 1898. Land was acquired for the colliery from the Hon. G.C. Calthorpe of Perry Hall in 1875 and slow progress was made until a coal seam was struck in 1880. Production got under way and Hamstead Village increased in size dramatically as terraces of brick houses were erected for the miners.
