Description:A newspaper cutting from the Birmingham Mail 11th July 1884.
This article gives an account of a prize fight that took place in a field near Perry Barr.
The fight was between two Black Country men known as "Big Ben" and the "Stinger".
The stakes were £20 a side and the fight drew an audience of about 200 with "scouts" being posted at strategic points to raise the alarm if the police appeared. After about an hours fighting "Stinger" was declared the winner despite having sustained a broken nose.
