Description:The photograph shows "the Handsworth volunteers" during the 1921 Miners' Strike. The picture is probably taken at Hamstead Colliery. The mines had been returned to private ownership following the First World War and the ensuing pit closures resulted in what was the first of several strikes, resulting in the famous General Strike of 1926. It is unclear whether the men in this photograph are on strike or are men brought in to work the mines during the strike action. Any inforamtion on the 1921 strike would be gratefully received.
