Description:Tindal Street Junior and Infant School opened in 1880 to accommodate 813 children who paid fees ranging between Id and 3d. Originally the Boys, Girls and Infants were all treated as separate schools, each with their own headteacher like other Board Schools. Tindal Schools were, however, regarded as a shining example of excellence and consistently achieved higher grants under the 'payment by results' system which lasted till 1900. The Inspector's Report of 1881 commented on the 'handsome and commodious, but unusually costly premises' and added 'the scholars are drawn from a better social class. . . . The teachers aim at mental culture rather than mere mechanical training.' Tindal School buildings were later enlarged and are still in use today.
