Description:Matthew Murray - text by Addie Vassie at hug, Amsterdam

Matthew’s images are universal in their insight and unintentionally have a tendency to make the viewer smile, by essentially capturing in colour the bizarre in everyday society.

Murray captures a fundamental sense of enjoyment and has a unique ability to somehow summarize humour simply within a single moment. Without being derogatory to his subject, he shows neither, cynicism or sarcasm, but an instinctive pureness of fun.

A successful editorial and commercial photographer, working for agencies such as TBWA, OGILVY AND MATHER. M&C SAATCHI, BBDO/CLM PARIS, and FALLONS. Also a regular contributor to publications such as i-D magazine. Murray’s personal work has been exhibited at The Photographers’ Gallery London, The National Portrait Gallery, London and The Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery.

His work will also be included in the forthcoming exhibition on British Contemporary Photography at The Huis Marseilles & FOAM (Photography museum) Amsterdam in December 2004. There are plans to travel this exhibition to other significant institutions and museums situated in key cities across Europe, beginning with Cologne. There will also be a book that will accompany this exhibition.
