Description:Norman Bartlam writes that: This picture and others like it filled the pages of the local press as a prelude to a visit to the area by Housing Minister Richard Crossman. After the ministerial visit, which took in Anderton Street and Chamberlain Gardens, Victor Yates MP said: "There is no doubt that the minister was shocked at what he saw". Twelve months earlier local people were being urged to set up resident associations to get their feelings across to the city council. Canon Norman Power was most active in supporting local people. A petition signed by four hundred women called for the immediate improvement of the neighbourhood around St Mark's Street. (Picture from the John Landon collection)
