Description:Drawing 'No.2' of the ground plan of the engine and 'No.3' side view of the pit framing, of the barrel and spiral, and outside view of part of the engine house.

These drawings show the winding barrel and spiral, the framing and wheels guiding the ropes into the pit, and also the pump that the engine worked as well.

This was a typical 'sun & planet' engine, applied to mine winding. It was ordered for Ecton copper mine in Derbyshire. The mine was owned by the Duke of Devonshire, and lay 12 miles south west of his estate at Chatsworth. The engine was of 8 horses power, with a 16 inch cylinder and 4 foot stroke. The piston rod was linked to the beam using James Watt’s parallel motion. [Scale: 1/3 of an inch to the foot]

This drawing is part of the Archives of Soho collection, which is held by Birmingham City Archives [Ref. MS3147/Portfolio/5/34]
